Caring for Leather: 4 Do's and Don'ts to Ensure Your Leather Looks Amazing for Years to Come

Keeping your leather in tiptop shape can be a struggle. What steps do you take to ensure that your leather products last a lifetime?

Luckily, it's not as hard as you think to properly take care of your leather products. Read on for our guide to caring for leather.

1. Don't Stretch It Out

Leather can be stretched out pretty easily. So, if you're using a leather purse or a leather wallet, make sure not to overfill it with everything you need. If you're having trouble, you may want to look into purchasing a larger bag or wallet.

When wearing a leather belt, if it does not fit properly, change the rung that it's on. Using your leather products responsibly will ensure that they last for a long time.

2. Clean Leather Products Regularly

Especially when you're using your leather products regularly, you'll want to make sure that you're keeping them clean. Brush your leather products with a damp cloth at least once a week. However, do not use soap or other chemical products which can degrade and damage the leather over time.

If your leather products are wet, don't rush to dry them out. Lay them out carefully so that they can dry out naturally.

3. Store Your Leather Goods Carefully

When you're not using your leather goods, you should make sure that you're storing them properly. Keep them out of the sun, to prevent fading and other damage.

Store your leather products in cool and dark places, to protect them from temperature and light which can cause damage. If you're planning to store your leather for a while, make sure that you're laying them flat so that they don't lose shape.

Never wrap leather products in plastic when you store them. Leather products won't be able to breathe when they're stored in plastic, which can cause mold and other forms of damage. Instead, wrap them in paper or cotton to allow air to continue to get to your leather products.

4. Use The Right Products

Once in a while, you'll want to maintain your leather products by using a leather conditioner. This will keep your leather goods supple and strong. You want to make sure that you're buying the best leather conditioner products for your needs.

You can buy a recommended product, or you can use a natural leather conditioner. Coconut oil, for example, can be a great choice for naturally conditioning your leather. You could even make your own leather conditioner, if you happen to be feeling crafty.

If you cause a stain or other damage to your leather, take steps to repair it ASAP. Stains can set in if they are left unattended for too long.
